Marketing Research

For this assignment I looked at the sales of a specific brand of electric car, the Toyota Prius in relation to gas prices over a period of 3 years. Having owned several Toyotas, the Prius was the first fuel efficient vehicle that came to mind. The reason I chose this specific situation is due to the current state of our country. The unpredictability of world affairs could lead to the increase of gasoline prices.
My hypothesis is, if gas prices rise many individuals will be trading in their gas guzzlers for vehicles that are more fuel efficient such as electric or hybrids. If gas prices do rise or there is a shortage of gas people can react in several ways.

A few independent variables to take into consideration-
People selling current vehicles and choosing to use public transportation, walking or biking.
People keeping current vehicles and carpooling to save on gas.

My prediction: After looking at the data collected, if gas prices rise (as they did in 2014 ) there will also be a rise Prius sales.

Below is the number of Prius sales and Gas Price per gallon in the US from January 2014 through December 2016.

gas prices (Y),
sales of Toyota Prius (X)
observation over a three year period or 36 months.

This is as far as I got with my data analysis. I was unclear as to what exactly was expected with this assignment, and what I was to do with the data after the fact.
